Key takeaways

  • YouTube fan funding (memberships, Supers, Shopping) opens at 500 subscribers, but ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, and new applicants need double the hours or views from February 1, 2027.
  • Before you qualify, the money comes from outside YouTube's payouts: affiliate links, sponsorships, your own products, memberships on other platforms, and an audience you move to a website, Discord, Telegram or app you own.
  • An offerwall can only live on that owned property, and rewards must never be tied to subscribing, liking, commenting or watching, because YouTube's fake engagement and spam policies prohibit it.

How to monetize a YouTube channel before 1,000 subscribers

You can monetize a YouTube channel before 1,000 subscribers in two ways. Inside YouTube, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) opens fan funding (channel memberships, Supers, Shopping) at 500 subscribers, but ad revenue still needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. Outside YouTube, you can earn from day one with affiliate links, sponsorships, your own products, memberships on other platforms, and a community on a website, Discord, Telegram or app you own. What you can never do is reward viewers for subscribing, liking, commenting or watching.

Every YouTube rule below comes from YouTube’s own help pages and blog, checked on October 29, 2026. A change is already scheduled for February 1, 2027, so confirm the numbers in the Earn section of YouTube Studio.

YouTube monetization requirements in 2026

YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program page for creators describes two levels. The lower one is what YouTube’s help center calls the expanded YouTube Partner Program, often called the fan funding tier. The higher one adds ad and YouTube Premium revenue.

RequirementFan funding tierAd revenue tier
Subscribers5001,000
Recent uploads3 qualified public uploads in the last 90 daysNot listed as a separate requirement
Watch hours (long-form)3,000 qualified hours in the last 365 days4,000 qualified hours in the last 365 days
Or Shorts views3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days
What it unlocksChannel memberships, Supers (Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks), gifts in eligible live streams, Shopping, YouTube Creator PartnershipsEverything in the fan funding tier, plus revenue sharing from ads and YouTube Premium

YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility page adds the conditions that apply at either level:

  • You live in a country or region where YPP is available.
  • Your channel has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
  • 2-Step Verification is on for your Google Account, and your channel has access to advanced features.
  • You link one active AdSense for YouTube account.
  • You follow YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Only public long-form watch hours count toward the 4,000 hours. Views in the Shorts feed, private, unlisted and deleted videos, and views from ad campaigns do not. The same page warns that monetization may be turned off for channels with no uploads or Posts tab activity for 6 months or more.

What changes on February 1, 2027

YouTube’s blog post New opportunities to earn and changes to the YouTube Partner Program (August 10, 2026) and the matching YPP updates help page set new ad revenue thresholds for creators who apply from February 1, 2027:

  • 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
  • Shorts ad and subscription revenue sharing needs 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days, however you qualified for YPP.
  • Creators already in YPP are not affected by the new entry thresholds.
  • The entry thresholds for fan funding and Shopping stay the same.

So if your channel is close to 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views, applying before February 1, 2027 matters. If it is far from them, plan on fan funding and off-platform income for longer.

What YouTube pays you before you qualify

Nothing directly. YouTube’s eligibility page says it may show ads on your videos before you join YPP, but you are not yet eligible to receive a share of that revenue. At 500 subscribers, fan funding pays you from your viewers, not from ads.

Two YouTube features people often expect earlier also need YPP. The YouTube Shopping affiliate program requires YPP membership, a channel not set as Made for Kids, no music or Official Artist channel, and a base in one of a short list of countries. Brand deals through YouTube Creator Partnerships are listed among the fan funding features. Deals you find and sign yourself do not need YPP at all, which is why the next section matters.

How to make money on YouTube without monetization

These options work at any subscriber count, because the money does not come through YouTube’s payouts.

Affiliate links

Affiliate links pay when a viewer buys or signs up through your link. They suit tutorials, reviews, gear lists and “what I use” videos, and they keep earning on old videos as long as the product exists. Pick programs whose products you actually use, and put the link where viewers look for it: the first lines of the description and a pinned comment. Offerwall vs affiliate links compares how each model pays, and CPA marketing for beginners explains pay-per-action offers.

Sponsorships

Brands buy audience fit, not only reach, so a 2,000-subscriber channel about one specific hobby can be worth more to the right sponsor than a broad channel ten times its size. Build a one-page media kit with your niche, average views per video, audience countries from YouTube Analytics, and two or three integration formats with prices.

Disclosure is required both by YouTube and by law. YouTube’s paid promotion disclosure page tells you to tick “My video contains paid promotion like a product placement, sponsorship, or endorsement” when you upload, and says you are responsible for complying with legal requirements, naming the FTC as an example. The FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says the disclosure should be in the video and not just in the description, and warns, “Don’t assume that a platform’s disclosure tool is good enough.” Affiliate disclosure rules: what the FTC requires has wording you can reuse.

Selling your own products

Your own product needs no program’s approval. Small channels sell best what viewers already ask for in comments: the spreadsheet from a budgeting video, the preset from an editing tutorial, a short course, or one-to-one sessions. Start with one.

Memberships outside YouTube

Channel memberships need the fan funding tier, but your viewers can support you elsewhere today: a membership platform such as Patreon or Ko-fi, Discord Server Subscriptions, or paid Telegram channels. The membership itself then lives on a platform you control better. How to monetize a Discord server and How to monetize a Telegram channel cover each platform’s paid features and rules. If you also stream, How to monetize a Twitch or Kick stream covers those programs.

Move your audience to a property you own

A YouTube subscriber is not really yours: the algorithm decides who sees your next video. A viewer who joins your email list, Discord server, Telegram channel, website or app is someone you can reach directly, and income from them does not depend on YPP.

Give people a reason to join, such as project files, early access or a weekly Q&A. Put the link in the description and pinned comment, and mention it briefly in the video. YouTube’s spam policy prohibits content created solely to drive users off YouTube to external sites, so the video has to be worth watching on its own and the link is a side note, never the point of the upload.

What YouTube bans: paying or rewarding viewers for engagement

YouTube’s fake engagement policy does not allow anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments or other metrics, and states that “content that solely exists to incentivize viewers for engagement (views, likes, comments, etc) is prohibited.” It names sub4sub deals and links to services that inflate metrics. The spam policy lists engagement manipulation through bots, coercion, or offering rewards.

The consequences are real: the content is removed, artificial traffic can lead to strikes, and three strikes within 90 days can end the channel. The channel monetization policies add that creators should not artificially inflate a channel’s engagement, and that YouTube may withhold earnings or suspend monetization on all your channels.

Asking is fine. The fake engagement policy says, “You’re allowed to encourage viewers to subscribe, hit the like button, share, or leave a comment.” The problem starts the moment a reward or a swap is attached.

Never do these to reach the threshold faster

Giving points, coins, roles, discounts or prize entries for subscribing, liking, commenting or watching; asking for a screenshot of a subscription to unlock something; Discord bots that grant rewards for a linked YouTube subscription; sub4sub and like-for-like groups; buying views, subscribers or watch hours; “watch my video in a muted tab” requests; and paid task sites that sell YouTube engagement. Each one can cost you the channel, and fake numbers also make the Partner Program review harder, not easier.

Where an offerwall fits, and where it does not

An offerwall lets users earn a currency by completing offers from advertisers, such as trying an app, finishing a game level or answering a survey, and pays the publisher for each completed offer. What is an offerwall? explains the model.

You cannot put an offerwall inside a YouTube video, in comments or in live chat. It belongs on the property you own: an earn page on your website, a Discord bot command, a Telegram Mini App, or a screen in your app. Viewers who join that community earn your points, and you earn per completed offer, whatever your subscriber count.

Rules for a clean setup:

  1. Points come only from completed offers. Nothing on YouTube earns anything: not subscribing, liking, commenting, watching, or joining a premiere.
  2. Users must be 16 or older. Many YouTube audiences are younger. Ask for age at sign-up, keep younger viewers out, require parental permission under 18, and skip the offerwall entirely if your channel is set as Made for Kids.
  3. Describe it honestly. “Earn points by trying apps and surveys in our Discord” is fine. “Free money” is misleading, and YouTube’s spam policy treats get rich quick schemes as scams. Promoting your offerwall: allowed and prohibited ways has wording you can copy.
  4. Keep videos about your content. Do not make videos whose only purpose is pushing viewers to the earn page.
  5. Disclose when you feature one offer. If you play a game on camera because its offer pays you, treat it as paid promotion and say so.
  6. Redeem points for fixed rewards. Merch discounts, members-only content, a custom role or a game key work well. Do not run raffles, and do not frame offers as giveaways.

Pricing a points store for viewers

Illustrative example, sample figures only: you set 100 points per $1 the offer pays you and pass 60% of that to users, so an offer that pays you $2.00 credits 120 points. If a $10 merch discount code costs 1,200 points, a viewer redeems it after completing offers that paid you $20. Try your own rate and split in the virtual currency calculator, and read How to set your virtual currency exchange rate.

Credit points only from a signed postback on your server, take them back when an offer is reversed, and allow one account per person. What is a postback URL? covers crediting, How to add an offerwall to a Discord bot covers the Discord build, and Stop multi-accounting and VPN abuse covers fraud.

A plan for a channel under 1,000 subscribers

  1. Add affiliate links to relevant videos, disclosed in the video.
  2. Pick one owned home where your viewers already spend time, and give them a reason to join.
  3. Pitch sponsors that fit your niche with a one-page media kit.
  4. Turn on fan funding at 500 subscribers. Memberships and Supers reward the viewers who already want to support you.
  5. Add a rewards program once the community is active. Only on that owned property, only for viewers 16 or older, and only for completed offers.
  6. Apply for the ad revenue tier as soon as you qualify, and before February 1, 2027 if you can, while the 4,000 hour and 10 million Shorts view thresholds still apply.

How to add Sharklio to your channel’s community

The wall goes on the property your viewers join, never in a video, the comments or live chat, and these are the steps.

  1. Apply as a publisher at sharklio.com. Every application is reviewed by hand, and once you are approved, apps you add are live right away. Skip this if your channel is set as Made for Kids.
  2. Add your website, bot or app in the dashboard and set the points name, icon, conversion rate, user split and wall design. You can also run a time-limited bonus later.
  3. Connect it. A website can use the floating Earn button or a signed offerwall link, and a self-hosted WordPress site can use a small plugin from How to add an offerwall to WordPress. A Discord server uses an /earn command signed for the member’s site account, and a Telegram community uses a Mini App.
  4. Ask for age at sign-up, and credit points only from the signed postback for completed offers, never for subscribing, liking, commenting or watching.
  5. Before you open it to members, test it with Test your app before launch, then put the earn page where members look, as Offerwall placement describes.

An earn page for your channel’s community

Sharklio is a pay-per-result affiliate network for creators whose viewers gather on a website, Discord bot, Telegram Mini App or app. Users must be 16 or older, offers depend on their country and device, and VPN, proxy, Tor and data center traffic is blocked from the wall. Frequently asked questions

What are the YouTube monetization requirements in 2026?

Fan funding needs 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, plus 2-Step Verification, a linked AdSense account and no active strikes.

Are the YouTube monetization requirements changing in 2027?

Yes. From February 1, 2027, new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 watch hours in 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days, along with 1,000 subscribers. Creators already in YPP are not affected, and fan funding thresholds stay the same.

Can you make money on YouTube without being monetized?

Yes. Affiliate links, sponsorships, your own products and memberships on other platforms all pay you at any subscriber count, because the money does not go through YouTube’s payouts.

Does YouTube pay you for ads before 1,000 subscribers?

No. YouTube may show ads on your videos before you join YPP, but you do not get a share. The 500-subscriber tier unlocks fan funding and Shopping, not ad revenue.

Can I reward viewers for subscribing or liking my videos?

No. YouTube’s fake engagement policy prohibits content that exists to incentivize views, likes or comments, and its spam policy lists offering rewards for engagement. Asking viewers to subscribe without a reward is allowed.

Can I put an offerwall in my YouTube videos?

No. An offerwall lives on a property you own, such as your website, Discord, Telegram or app, and rewards there must come only from completed offers, never from anything viewers do on YouTube.
