How Roblox Developers Make Money: DevEx, Passes, Ads

Key takeaways

  • Roblox developers earn Robux from passes, developer products, subscriptions, paid access, private servers, Creator Rewards, Roblox Plus incentives and Roblox's own ads, then cash out through DevEx at $0.0038 per Earned Robux (30,000 minimum).
  • Premium Payouts no longer exist: Creator Rewards replaced engagement-based payouts on July 24, 2025, and Roblox Plus replaced new Premium sign-ups on April 30, 2026.
  • Roblox does not allow third-party ad SDKs, independent rewarded ads, off-platform sales, or rewards for off-platform actions without a Roblox contract, so a third-party offerwall cannot be used inside a Roblox experience.

How do Roblox developers make money?

Roblox developers make money by selling things for Robux inside their experiences (passes, developer products, subscriptions, paid access and private servers), by earning platform payouts such as Creator Rewards and Roblox Plus incentives, by showing Roblox’s own immersive and rewarded video ads, and by selling avatar items, plugins and models. The Robux they earn become real money through the Developer Exchange (DevEx), which pays $0.0038 per Earned Robux at the standard rate once you have at least 30,000 Earned Robux. Every payment runs through Roblox’s own systems: third-party payments, ad SDKs and off-platform reward schemes are not allowed inside an experience.

Premium Payouts ended, Roblox Plus arrived, the DevEx rate went up and new ad rules took effect between mid-2025 and mid-2026. Figures below come from Roblox’s own docs, newsroom and policies, checked on October 20, 2026; confirm them in your Creator Dashboard, since Roblox updates them often.

Roblox’s Earning on Roblox page sums up the shares: creators “generally earn 70%” of what they sell for Robux in their experience, 30% of what they sell in the Marketplace, and up to 90% for things sold for real money, such as paid access.

Passes, developer products and subscriptions

Passes: buy once, keep forever

Passes charge a one-time Robux fee for a lasting privilege: a VIP area, a permanent speed boost, a special tool, an avatar item. Starting May 30, 2026, Roblox disabled cross-game pass sales, so sell passes inside your own experience.

Developer products: buy as often as you like

Developer products are items a player can buy again and again, such as in-game currency, ammo or potions. Prices run from 1 Robux to 1 billion Robux. Grant the item on your server in the ProcessReceipt callback, not on PromptProductPurchaseFinished, which does not confirm a purchase. If you sell your own soft currency here, How to set your virtual currency exchange rate covers pricing it so your economy does not inflate.

Subscriptions: recurring benefits

Experience subscriptions renew monthly. Price them in Robux (49 Robux or more) or at one of five local currency price points: $2.99, $4.99, $7.99, $9.99 or $14.99. You are always paid in Robux: 70% of the value every month for Robux pricing, or 70% in the first month and 100% in later months for local currency pricing, at $0.01 to 1 Robux after platform fees.

Hybrid monetization for games explains how to combine purchases and rewarded ads by player segment; the same thinking applies on Roblox.

Paid access charges for entry: 25 to 1,000 Robux, or in local currency, where Roblox’s paid access in local currency page offers three tiers on computer and web: $9.99 (you get 50%), $29.99 (60%) and $49.99 (70%), before taxes and VAT. You must be 13+ with a verified ID and a Tipalti account, and earnings are held in escrow for at least 60 days.

Private servers can charge players a monthly Robux fee for access. They cannot be combined with paid access, and changing the price cancels every active private server subscription.

Premium Payouts are gone: Creator Rewards and Roblox Plus

Roblox’s engagement-based payouts page now says the program was deprecated on July 24, 2025 and replaced by Creator Rewards.

Creator Rewards

The Creator Rewards doc describes two parts:

  • Daily Engagement Rewards: you earn 5 Robux each day when your experience is one of the first three an Active Spender plays for 10 minutes or more. An Active Spender has made qualifying purchases of at least $9.99 on Roblox in the past 60 days.
  • Audience Expansion Rewards: when a new user (or one back after 60+ days away) arrives through your share link, a direct link or a search for your experience’s name and plays for 10 minutes, you earn 35% of their first $100 of purchases on Roblox in their first 60 days. You need an ID-verified account and 100+ average DAU over the next 60 days.

Both rewards arrive as Earned Robux after a 60-day holding period.

Roblox Plus

Roblox’s newsroom post Introducing Roblox Plus (April 10, 2026) announced a $4.99 a month subscription that launched on April 30, 2026. New Premium sign-ups stopped. For creators it adds:

  • 250 Robux a month for each of a new subscriber’s first three months (up to 750 Robux) when they subscribe from inside your experience through the PromptRobloxSubscriptionPurchase API.
  • Up to 100 Robux for each Plus subscriber who spends 60 or more cumulative minutes in your paid private servers over 30 days.
  • Subscriber discounts of 10% to 20% that Roblox pays for, so your earnings per item do not drop.

Roblox ads for creators: immersive and rewarded video

Immersive ads

Immersive ads are image and video billboards plus portal ads that teleport players into an advertiser’s experience. You earn per impression, per click-to-play video watched for 15 seconds, and per portal teleport. Roblox pays on the 25th of the following month. To qualify, a public experience needs an approved Maturity and Compliance Questionnaire and 2,000 unique visitors a month, and the owner must be 13+, ID verified and using two-step verification.

Rewarded video ads

Rewarded video ads are full-screen videos of 6 to 30 seconds that a player chooses to watch for a reward. Earnings come from impressions, at an EPM (earnings per 1,000 impressions). The reward must be a developer product, never Robux or a randomized item, granted right after the video ends, and it should not inflate your economy. Eligibility matches immersive ads, and the experience must also be unrestricted with no free-form user creation. What are rewarded ads? explains the format in general.

The 2026 advertising rules

Roblox’s DevForum announcement New Advertising Policies & Standards (March 20, 2026, with updates through June 17) changed three things that matter here:

  • “By May 4, all independent rewarded video implementations must be migrated to Roblox’s native Rewarded Video format.” Home-made rewarded ad systems are no longer allowed.
  • Roblox does not permit third parties to run SDKs for serving, targeting or measuring advertising.
  • “Any rewarded advertising formats are not permitted for U13 users.” Brand deals in your experience must be registered and labeled under the Advertising Integrations policy.

Avatar items, Creator Store and commerce

  • Avatar items: Marketplace sales earn the creator 30%. Roblox’s Marketplace policy requires the creator or group owner to have Roblox Plus or Premium 1000/2200, government ID verification or a linked parental account, two-step verification, and a publishing advance of 10 to 2,500 Robux per item.
  • Creator Store: plugins and models sell for US dollars (at least $4.99 for plugins and $2.99 for models), with only taxes and payment processing deducted and a 30-day escrow on each sale.
  • Commerce products: commerce products let you sell physical merchandise from a linked Shopify store inside your experience. You must be 18+ and verified, and only US-based users who are 13+ (18+ in Texas) can buy.

DevEx: turning Robux into money

The Developer Exchange doc sets the current rules. Checked on October 20, 2026:

DevEx ratePer Earned RobuxApplies to
Standard$0.0038 (about $114 for 30,000)Earned Robux since September 5, 2025
US 18+ rate$0.0054Certain Earned Robux from developer products, passes, subscriptions and private servers bought by US players verified as 18+
Legacy$0.0035 (about $105 for 30,000)Balances earned before September 5, 2025 at 10am PT; these cash out first

Roblox’s newsroom post on the 42% DevEx increase (April 30, 2026) says the higher rate took effect on June 8 and applies to age-checked US players 18 and older in eligible experiences that use R15 avatars.

DevEx eligibility

You must be at least 13, have 30,000+ Earned Robux, a verified email, a DevEx Portal account and a W-9 or W-8 tax form, and stay within the Terms of Use and Community Standards. Scams, account theft and exchanging Robux for real currency outside DevEx are listed reasons for rejection.

You can make one request per calendar month. First requests take about 10 business days to process and later ones about 5, plus bank transfer time. Bought Robux, monthly stipends, trades, transfers and gift card Robux do not count as Earned Robux.

Illustrative example: what 1,000 pass sales are worth

Suppose you sell a 100 Robux pass 1,000 times in your own experience. Players spend 100,000 Robux and you keep 70%, or 70,000 Earned Robux. At the standard $0.0038 rate that is $266. If every buyer were an age-checked US adult in an eligible experience, the $0.0054 rate would make it $378. Sample figures only, using Roblox’s published shares and rates; real earnings depend on your sales mix and who buys.

Off-platform rules: payments, links and rewards

Roblox’s Community Standards set the limits that matter most for monetization outside the built-in tools. Under Roblox Economy and Safety, they prohibit:

  • Off-platform, secondary market transactions for account access or for virtual content from experiences or the Marketplace.
  • Using third-party services to buy, sell, trade or give away Robux (Roblox gift cards aside).
  • Circumventing Roblox payment systems or fees, including giving players indirect benefits for purchases made elsewhere.
  • Using off-platform services or products to sell on-platform items. Off-platform commercial promotions bundled with on-platform rewards need a contractual agreement with Roblox.
  • Promoting contests or games of chance with Robux or real-money prizes without Roblox’s direct involvement, and any real-money gambling.
  • Directing users off Roblox. External links are allowed only through the Social Links feature on experience, group and profile pages, which requires Roblox’s age check and an age of at least 16.

Things that put a Roblox experience or DevEx account at risk

Selling passes or currency on your own website, granting in-experience items to people who pay you on another service, trading items for real money, a home-made rewarded ad system or third-party ad SDK, rewarded ads for under-13 players, your own Robux giveaways, and external links outside Social Links.

Can a Roblox game use an offerwall?

No. A third-party offerwall cannot be used inside a Roblox experience. An offerwall rewards users in your currency for completing advertisers’ offers, and each part of that conflicts with Roblox’s rules: third parties may not run ad SDKs, independent rewarded formats had to end by May 4, 2026, rewarded video rewards must be developer products served through Roblox’s own system, external links are off-limits except Social Links, and on-platform rewards for off-platform promotions need a contract with Roblox. You also cannot reward Robux, and no rewarded format may reach players under 13.

It works the other way too: points earned on your website or Discord server must never turn into Robux, passes, developer products or avatar items in your experience, because that bundles an off-platform promotion with on-platform rewards.

An offerwall can fit the properties you run outside Roblox, each with its own currency and audience:

Age is the real filter. Roblox allows players under 13, and its own ad rules treat them separately. Offerwalls do not belong in front of children; Offerwall COPPA rules explains why and how to age screen. If your community is mostly young Roblox players, skip the offerwall and focus on the methods above.

Which Roblox monetization to start with

  1. From day one: one or two fair passes (a VIP area, a cosmetic) and a developer product; Daily Engagement Rewards need no setup.
  2. When you have regulars: the Roblox Plus prompt at a natural moment, a subscription if you can deliver ongoing value, and private servers.
  3. At 2,000 unique visitors a month: check ads eligibility and test one rewarded video placement.
  4. At 100+ average DAU: verify your ID so Audience Expansion Rewards can pay, and share your experience link.
  5. Before 30,000 Earned Robux: prepare your tax form so the DevEx Portal step does not delay your first cash-out.

For a wider view of models outside Roblox, see How to monetize an app; for a community server elsewhere, How to monetize a Minecraft server covers a similar set of platform rules.

Where Sharklio fits for a Roblox developer

Sharklio is a pay-per-result affiliate network, and it is not for Roblox experiences. It fits your other properties: a website, a mobile game with the Android, iOS, Unity, Flutter or React Native integrations, or a Discord community whose members are 16 or older. Each app sets its own currency name, rate and split, a signed postback reports every credit and reversal, VPN traffic is blocked, and every application and app is reviewed by hand. Keep what users earn there out of your Roblox experience. See how the wall works, or get in touch if you are not sure your audience fits.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 Robux worth through DevEx?

At the standard DevEx rate, one Earned Robux is worth $0.0038, so 100,000 Earned Robux is $380. Certain Robux from age-checked US adults earn $0.0054, and balances from before September 5, 2025 cash out at $0.0035 (checked on October 20, 2026).

How many Robux do you need to DevEx?

You need at least 30,000 Earned Robux, which is about $114 at the standard rate. You also need to be 13 or older, have a verified email, a DevEx Portal account and a tax form on file.

Do Roblox Premium Payouts still exist?

No. Roblox deprecated engagement-based payouts, often called Premium Payouts, on July 24, 2025 and replaced them with Creator Rewards.

Can Roblox developers use third-party ads or offerwalls?

No. Roblox does not permit third parties to run advertising SDKs, independent rewarded video ended on May 4, 2026, and on-platform rewards for off-platform promotions need a contract with Roblox.

Can I give players Robux for watching ads or completing tasks?

No. Roblox’s rewarded video rules say rewards must be developer products and cannot be Robux, and its Community Standards ban giving away Robux through third-party services.

How old do you have to be to earn money on Roblox?

DevEx, immersive ads, rewarded video ads and local currency paid access all require the creator to be at least 13, with ID verification for ads and paid access. Commerce products require 18.
